Getting Care

Where can I get care?

The Military Health System is a global, comprehensive, integrated system. Depending on your plan, you’ll get care from a military hospital or clinic, a civilian network of providers, or TRICARE-authorized non-network providers.

For more information, visit Provider Types or use the Find a Doctor tool.

Military Hospitals and Clinics

The Defense Health Agency operates military hospitals and clinics around the world. You may be able to seek care at a military hospital or clinic, depending on where you are, what plan you have, and your beneficiary category. Learn about military hospitals and clinics.

Civilian Network

You can also seek care from a civilian network of TRICARE-authorized providers. This network depends on what region you’re in.

To search for a provider in one of our provider directories, use the Find a Doctor tool to get you to the right directory for you.

Note: You may be able to see a non-network TRICARE-authorized provider, depending on your TRICARE plan. But you may have higher costs, and you may have to file your own claims.

How do I get care based on my plan?

When you enroll in a TRICARE Prime option, you’ll get most of your routine care from an assigned or selected primary care manager.

Your PCM may be:

  • At a military hospital or clinic
  • A civilian TRICARE network provider
  • A primary care provider under the US Family Health Plan

Referrals and pre-authorizations may be required for certain services.

For more information, visit Book Appointments.

TRICARE Prime options include these plans:

With TRICARE Select and most TRICARE premium-based plans, you can get care from any TRICARE-authorized network provider without a referral or pre-authorization, in most situations.

You’ll have lower out-of-pocket costs if you use a TRICARE-authorized network provider versus a TRICARE-authorized non-network provider. If you choose a non-authorized non-network provider, you won’t be reimbursed by TRICARE.

To find a TRICARE network provider, use the Find a Doctor tool or call your regional contractor.

These plans include:

You can get care from any TRICARE-authorized provider, but finding a Medicare participating provider is your best option. Learn more about Medicare providers.

Outside the U.S. and U.S. territories, you’ll work with the overseas contractor to find an approved overseas provider.

When you aren’t enrolled in a TRICARE plan, you’re only eligible to get care at military hospitals and clinics, if space is available. Any care you get from civilian providers isn’t covered by TRICARE.
